St.
Mary, Star of the Sea Elementary School Events…
The New Year has started off with a flurry of activities.
During the 2nd and 3rd weeks of January the 4th and 8th grade
classes took the New York State English -Language Arts exams.
Then from the 22nd through the 25th the entire school took
their mid-term examinations which end the 2nd marking period.
St. Mary’s also had an Open House for new students and
their parents from Sunday, January 27th through Wednesday,
the 30th. The School also hosted the City Island Cub Scouts
Pine Wood Derby on January 19th.
Catholic Schools Week runs from Sunday, January 27th through
Sunday, February 3rd. The theme this year is “Catholic
Schools Light The Way”. As a Catholic school, one of
our goals is to integrate the gospels into our teaching for
every subject… doing unto others; love thy neighbor…
because what you say and what you do always has impact. There
is always an effect, so one must learn responsibility and
accountability in life. Along with Catholic School Week we
celebrate Spirit week here at St. Mary’s. On Tuesday,
January 29th we had Crazy Hat Day and on Wednesday, the 30th,
we enjoyed Color Day where each class picked a color and adorned
their uniform in creative ways with items of that color. Wednesday,
the 31st, brought Crazy Sock and Sneaker Day ending the month
with some fun and a little silliness.
On Thursday, February 1st, we’ll celebrate an International
Luncheon. Our students in grades 3 through 8 will bring in
entrees representing their own heritage, or that of a culture
or region they are studying in school. Classes Pre-K, Kindergarten,
1st and 2nd grades will bring desserts for the school to enjoy.
The feast is shared by all classes with teachers and parents
joining in the repast.
On Friday, February 2nd, we’ll celebrate our First Friday
Mass. This month every grade will participate with selected
readings and portions of the Mass.
Registration for incoming students to Pre-K and Kindergarten
through 8th grade will be held during President’s Week,
Tuesday, February 19ththrough Friday, February 22nd. We hope
you will consider St. Mary, Star of the Sea for your child.
When coming for registration, please be sure to bring the
child’s birth certificate, baptismal certificate (if
applicable), record of immunization, latest report card from
last school attended (if applicable) and $75.00 registration
fee. We offer the Cardinals Scholarship, an income based award,
for incoming kindergarteners and for any student in grades
1st through 6th coming from a public school.
