HISTORY OF THE CHURCH
In 1977, the 90th anniversary jubilee year for St. Mary Star of the Sea
Church, then Pastor, Monsignor John P. Sullivan, said in a letter to the
parishioners that the following “beautifully warm word picture of a
unique island parish that has identified in so many ways with the
nautical and historical City Island that you cannot separate one from
the other.” So here follows that history of the island and the parish
written by Virginia Gallagher for the heritage journal.
